The Dalai Lama is the head of state and the spiritual leader of Tibet. In 1989he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his nonviolent struggle for the liberationof Tibet. He has traveled to more than sixty-two countries with his message of peace, nonviolence, interreligious understanding, universal responsibility,and compassion. He has authored more than seventy-two books, most recently In My Own Words: An Introduction to My Teachings and Philosophy (2008).
