Massoumeh Ebtekar is a politician, environmental activist, and associate professor of immunology at Tarbiat Modares University in Tehran. As Iran’s first woman vice president since the Islamic Revolution, she led efforts to tackle air pollution in Tehran and protect marine life in the Persian Gulf. She also served as the head of the Environment Protection Organization of Iran and was named Champion of the Earth by the United Nations Environment Programme in 2006. She is a Tehran City Councilor and president of the Center for Peace and Environment, a nongovernmental organization devoted to the promotion of just and sustainable peace and the protection of the environment.
