Pope John Paul II

Pope John Paul II (1920–2005) was born Karol Józef Wojtyla in 1920 and served as Pope of the Catholic Church and Sovereign of Vatican City from October1978 until his death almost twenty-seven years later. When he became Pope, John Paul II was already an avid sportsman, jogging in the Vatican gardens,weightlifting, swimming, and hiking in the mountains. John Paul II has been widely acclaimed as one of the most influential leaders of the twentieth century.
