Wangari Muta Maathai

Wangari Maathai was born in Nyeri, Kenya, and was the first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate. She is the founder of the Green Belt Movement, an environmentalist, a civil society and women’s rights activist, and a parliamentarian. In 2004 she became the first African woman to receive theNobel Peace Prize for her contribution to sustainable development, democracy, and peace.
